This page lists events for the IFA and other forestry organizations in Illinois.  The sponsoring organization(s) are indicated.  It is not always possible to provide complete descriptions for other organizations' events, but we try to at least provide you with a contact for more information.

About Registration

Even though most of these events are free and open to the public, it will help the organizers to know how many will be attending.  So, please register for these events whenever possible.  This will also help you, because if weather looks threatening, the organizers can easily send you a message about whether the event will be held or delayed or cancelled.

Some partner organizations are handling registration for certain events.  For those, registration is disabled.

If you have an upcoming event that you feel relates to forestry in, or near, Illinois, please send the details including contact information to the administrator

If you have any problem with this Event List or any problem registering for an event, please post a comment on our HELP Forum under the "Events Problems" topic.

    Tuesday, December 8, 2015, 12 and 7 p.m. Eastern Time

Why do you own woodlands? This is an interesting question, and one you have likely asked yourself. Individually, everyone likely has myriad reasons for holding woodlands. Hopefully your woodlands bring levels of satisfaction and enjoyment to life; however, you likely have questions, issues, challenges, and uncertainties associated with your land. In this webinar, we will look at the some of the top issues identified through surveys and discussions with Pennsylvania woodland owners. It is one thing to identify the issues; it is another thing to find resources to attain resolution. We cannot promise to cover your issue or provide the solution you need, though through this process, we might open new conversations, find new resources, and help you conserve and better manage your woodlands. Presented by Jim Finley, Ibberson Professor of Forest Management and Director of the Center for Private Forests at Penn State.

    • Dixon Springs and Vienna, IL

Mark your calendar for this one-day workshop, beginning with a classroom session at the Dixon Springs Ag Center, and then moving over to Joe FitzSimmons' farm near Vienna for the field portion of the training.

Beginning saw users may want to wait for the two-day session that will be held in early March or April.  Watch for details as they become available.

There will likely be a modest fee to cover expenses.  Advance registration will be required and available online here, as soon as plans are finalized.

For more information, contact Jim Kirkland at 618/695-3383.

    • 12/12/2015
    • 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
    • JoDaviess County - Dufford Farm, South of Stockton

This Northwestern IL Forestry Association (NIFA) event is free, and limited to 30 participants.  Please register by Saturday, November 7th.  NIFA will then send out a reminder email confirming the location and directions.  Then, on Friday, November 13th, they will notify everyone of the probability for the burn.

If everything works out, this will be a chance to observe an actual prescribed forest burn and discuss the planning, preparation, and variables that enter into having a successful burn.  This observation of a prescribed burn will offer these opportunities

    • to see and learn the methodology behind installing adequate fire breaks,
    • to learn about and see necessary fire equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) needed to conduct an Rx fire,
    • to learn about favorable and unfavorable weather conditions for burning,
    • to learn how to use the prevailing winds as your ally in executing a safe and controlled burn,
    • to learn how to use topography to execute a safe and controlled burn,
    • to see a prescribed burn in action and
    • to observe the fire effects immediately afterward.

IDNR District Forester Jeff Harris will be available to describe aspects of the burn in progress and explain the preparation that preceded it, and answer any questions.

Because prescribed burns are very dependent upon appropriate weather conditions, there can be no guarantee that the stated date and time will be accurate.  Therefore, NIFA asks that you register for this event.  That will allow us to notify you of any last minute decisions to change the date or time.

Early detection and response is key in managing invasive pests. The Illinois First Detector Workshops, now in their fourth year, are aimed at improving first detector training and invasive species awareness. The workshops will cover new topics on current and emerging invasive plants, pathogens, and insects, along with updates on previous workshop topics.

“We are looking forward to another year of First Detector Workshops and are excited about sharing these new topics with participants,” said Kelly Estes, state survey coordinator. “Each year the popularity of these trainings continues to grow, but more importantly, the enthusiasm of the participants grows each year. It’s wonderful to see so many people taking an active interest in learning more about invasive species and how plant pests can affect their communities.”

As in previous years, these in-depth training sessions will cover material that includes: identification/detection; cycle/biology; hosts; sampling; management; commonly confused lookalikes; and regulation.

    Specific course topics will include:

    • Your role as a first detector
    • Illinois Exotic Weed Act
    • Jumping worms
    • Boxwood blight/Thousand Cankers Disease update
    • Insect forest invaders

Those attending will take part in hands-on activities, which will allow attendees to examine these pests and diseases in more detail.

The target audience includes certified arborists, tree care professionals, Master Gardeners, Master Naturalists, forestry and natural resource professionals, conservationists, and others with an interest in invasive species.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be available for IAA Certified Arborists, Continuing Forestry Education Credits, Master Gardeners, and Master Naturalists.

Workshops will be held at the following locations:

    • Jan. 28 Waterloo 618-939-3434
