William Handel of the Illinois Natural History Survey will lead a tour of selected areas of Mississippi Palisades State Park near Savanna on Saturday, April 28th, beginning at 1:00 pm.  Mr. Handel will discuss efforts at the park to eradicate invasive species and re-establish native plant communities as well as the effects that work has upon the forest ecology and tree growth.  In addition, the tour will inspect spring ephemerals that may be in bloom; Mr. Handel can discuss their characteristics and answer questions.

Mr. Handel is a plant ecologist and botanist specializing in ecological restoration, fire ecology, threatened and endangered species, and ethnobotany.  While his office is in Champaign, Illinois, he grew up in northwestern Illinois where his family still own forest land.  He was instrumental in the battle against invasives at the state park.

Those interested should meet at Mississippi Palisades State Park main office at 1:00 pm.  This tour, sponsored by the Northwest Illinois Forestry Association, is free and open to the public.
